[cross-post] Build Week

We have a habit of sprinting a lot at Mozilla. We also have a habit of having a lot of meetings. Recently I’ve started to feel the strain on balancing the number of builds I have in my queue, and the number of meetings popping up during my more productive hours of the day.

So with all this combined I’m going to do something that we hate doing at Mozilla, but do it so that I might get through all the stuff in my queue in time. I am however going to do this as openly as possible.

I’m not accepting meetings this week!

Or rather, I’m doing a week without meetings so that my productive hours are mine to build. Its a little like having a reading week like any university student will have encountered before today, though I’m calling it build week.

For this to work properly I’m also going to be fairly unresponsive on all forms of digital communication. This means ignoring all but critical messages.

To avoid too much silo. To avoid many closed process. To avoid such exclusion. Here is my plan for the week at the meta level.

Week plan:

Build Week Notebook

Monday

Monday (today) has been all about planning for the week. Makings sure I have all the resources I need to go heads down w/o to many pauses and tangents. It was the course of today that has lead to the wonderfully full notebook that you see above. (Thats only 2 of 4 pages you see.)

Tuesday – Wednesday

All about the Maker Party! I’m going to be building out an dynamically updated infographic, a community quilt w/ companion makes, a love bomb, and a super secret special something.

Wednesday – Thursday

This will be focused on the community quilt mentioned above, but this time on documentation, metrics gathering, and a small refactor to allow for better + easier configuration.

Thursday

Some time to hack on Kit Builder and a little time for Webmaker Kits.

Kit Builder is a tool to generate webmaker teaching kits. The current version however is based on a series of unmaintainable hacks so we’re switching it to use a slightly more sane system for generation. NunJucks.

Friday

Time to get ThunderHug ready for the Mozilla Festival. What is ThunderHug?

The Festival app was code named FireHug, the call for proposals companion app that we are building is called ThunderHug. More on that later.

How can you help me out?

Give me this week. No meetings. No interruptions unless I’ve already emailed you about doing so. This week is as much about building stuff, as it is about keeping my sanity.

If it can wait a week schedule it into my calendar for next week. I’ll accept it as long as I’m not doing anything else. Don’t bother confirming times, just check zimbra.

One final note. Thank you in advance for your patience while I allow for sanity in my brain thingumabob. :)
